Saint Ephrem the Syrian, also called Ephrem of Edessa, lived throughout the 4th century within the metropolis of Nisibis, which was then part of the Roman Empire. Born to Christian mother and father, Ephrem grew up immersed within the teachings of the Church. He devoted himself to a lifetime of prayer, fasting, and repair to others from a younger age. Despite his need for solitude and asceticism, Ephrem’s deep love for Christ led him to serve the Church as a deacon.
