Scotland’s Christians really feel excluded, survey finds

A latest ballot of Christians in Scotland has recognized a “palpable feeling of exclusion” from public life.


In the survey of over 1,000 Scots, greater than 70 per cent of these figuring out as Christian felt that the Scottish authorities doesn’t help them, the Herald newspaper experiences.

Three quarters of Christian respondents mentioned they had been involved about abuse directed at Christian politicians. 

Around seven in 10 mentioned they’d skilled prejudice for his or her religion, together with “detrimental feedback or attitudes in direction of them”, whereas an identical proportion mentioned they had been “reluctant to talk about their religion in public”.

Non-Christian respondents totally different of their perceptions, with a majority saying that Christians in Scotland don’t face any discrimination. 

The survey was carried out by Christian assume tank Logos Scotland, which is asking on First Minister John Swinney to do extra to enhance tolerance of Christians.

Logos CEO Shona Haslam mentioned: “These findings expose a palpable feeling of exclusion amongst Scotland’s vibrant Christian neighborhood.”

It follows latest hostility in direction of SNP MSP Kate Forbes over her affiliation with the Free Church of Scotland, particularly her Christian beliefs about abortion and same-sex marriage. 

Data from the most recent Scottish Census in 2022 revealed that non-religious Scots now outnumber followers of a faith for the primary time within the nation, whereas the proportion of Scots belonging to the Church of Scotland declined within the earlier decade from 32.4% to twenty.4%.

Haslam continued, “One in three Scots maintain a Christian religion, but it is clear that there’s a lot work to be carried out to extend tolerance in direction of this religion group.

“Swinney has promised a extra inclusive, unified authorities and nation underneath his new management. We hope the info will help information leaders to hearken to the views of all Scots within the decision-making processes of our nation – together with Christians.”
