WANDLITZ, Germany — Embattled German Chancellor Olaf Scholz appeared to have earned a reprieve on Sunday as exit polls signaled that his party held off a powerful problem from the far proper to win a key regional election within the japanese state of Brandenburg.
Scholz’s Social Democrats (SPD) completed first with 31 %, based on the exit polls for German public tv, adopted by the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) with 30 %. The center-right Christian Democrats garnered 12 %.
A loss in Brandenburg, which the SPD has managed since German reunifcation, would have solid doubt on Scholz’s political future and elevated strain for a snap nationwide election after his party suffered crushing defeats in two earlier state elections this month.
