Safety deteriorating at Ukraine nuclear plant after drone strike, IAEA warns

Safety at Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia nuclear energy plant is deteriorating, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) warned following a drone strike close to the power, Europe’s largest nuclear plant.

The drone struck about 100 meters from the Dniprovska energy line — the one remaining 750-kilovolt line offering an influence provide to the plant, the IAEA mentioned in an announcement on Saturday.

“Yet once more we see an escalation of the nuclear security,” IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi mentioned within the assertion. “I stay extraordinarily involved and reiterate my name for optimum restraint from all sides and for strict observance of the 5 concrete ideas established for the safety of the plant.”

Russia gained management of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear energy plant shortly after it invaded Ukraine in February 2022. There is widespread concern in regards to the security of the plant, which is positioned on the southern financial institution of the Dnipro River about 50 kilometers southwest of the town of Zaporizhzhia.
