Rights group says Vietnam’s imprisonment of Khmer monks violated spiritual freedom

Human rights activists accused Vietnam of infringing freedom of faith after a courtroom handed jail sentences this week to 5 ethnically Khmer Buddhist monks and 4 spiritual activists.

A courtroom within the southern province of Long An condemned the boys to jail phrases between two and 6 years after discovering them responsible of “abusing democratic freedoms to infringe upon state pursuits” and illegally detaining individuals, in line with a police assertion.

Among them, Khmer Krom Buddhist monk Thach Chanh Da Ra was given the longest, six-year jail time period throughout a trial on Tuesday, Vietnam’s Ministry of Public Security stated in a press release.
