A uncommon spectacle started Sunday night time as an August supermoon blue moon rose into the sky.

The first of 2024’s 4 consecutive supermoons, the blue moon – also called the Sturgeon Moon – was anticipated to achieve peak illumination on Monday and shine brightly by way of Wednesday.

According to NASA, 100% of the moon’s nearside might be illuminated on Monday, and 99% might be illuminated on Tuesday.

August’s full moon is the primary of 4 consecutive supermoons this 12 months. The September full moon – referred to as the Harvest Moon – will attain peak illumination on Tuesday, Sept. 17.

The Hunter’s Moon will peak on Thursday, Oct. 17 and the ultimate supermoon – referred to as the Beaver Moon – will peak on Friday, Nov. 15.
