Minnesota election judge faces felony fees over accepting unregistered votes


A Minnesota election judge is being charged after allegedly accepting individuals who weren’t correctly registered to vote within the 2024 election.

Timothy Michael Scouton, who served as the top election judge for the Badoura Township Precinct in Hubbard County, Minnesota, is being charged with one rely of accepting the vote of an unregistered voter and one rely of neglect of obligation by an election official, each felonies, in line with a report from Fox 9.

Police say they had been notified by an election auditor that 11 voters didn’t full correct registration types, but had been allowed to vote regardless of not with the ability to full the types which are used to authenticate their id.

Those votes had been allowed regardless of Scouton reportedly finishing his election judge coaching and head election judge coaching in July, the report notes.

Authorities spoke with one other judge who labored with Scouton on the night time of the election, with the judge telling police that Scouton instructed her to not use the right registration types. Another judge working with Scouton instructed police that she was not conscious of the right types and was instructed by Scouton to have voters signal the again of a ebook.

Scouton was arrested on the fees by the Hubbard County Sheriff’s Office, who stated he “declined to offer a press release.”

Meanwhile, the Minnesota Secretary of State acknowledged that the fees in opposition to Scouton had been “very severe.”

“These allegations are extraordinarily severe and have to be totally and totally investigated,” the Secretary of State’s workplace stated in a press release to Fox 9. “Election judges take an oath to manage elections in accordance with the regulation, a deliberate failure to take action is illegal and a betrayal of the general public belief. Minnesota’s elections depend on the dedication and public service of 30,000 folks and they’re required to conduct their work pretty, impartially, and inside the letter of the regulation. The Hubbard County Auditor took immediate and proper motion in notifying native authorities of the uncovered discrepancies so they may examine.”
