Macron skips EU summit to go to cyclone-hit island Mayotte


PARIS — Emmanuel Macron is not going to attend Thursday’s European Council assembly in Brussels as he heads to Mayotte, a French oversea territory within the Indian Ocean dealing with the aftermath of a devastating tropical cyclone.

Macron shall be represented on the council by his German counterpart Olaf Scholz, “in accordance with established apply between France and Germany,” the French presidency mentioned in an announcement. He will attend Wednesday night’s EU-Western Balkans summit in Brussels, it added.

Tropical cyclone Chido struck Mayotte on Saturday, inflicting in depth harm to each lives and infrastructure. As of Tuesday night, the official toll stood at 22 dead and 1,373 injured. However, native authorities warn the loss of life toll might attain a number of thousand.
