Scottish politicians have been warned towards legalising assisted suicide as Holyrood prepares to scrutinise a Bill introduced ahead by Lib Dem MSP Liam McArthur.

The Assisted Dying for Terminally Ill Adults (Scotland) Bill would make it authorized for terminally sick folks aged 16 and above in Scotland to be prescribed deadly medicine from docs to finish their lives.

In a submission to Holyrood’s Health Committee, Christian charity CARE for Scotland mentioned that the regulation was morally impermissable.

The submission argues that the proposals would put susceptible folks at profound danger and be “detrimental” to the connection between docs and sufferers.

Authored by CARE for Scotland coverage officer Michael Veitch, it says that medical professionals shouldn’t be concerned in helping somebody to finish their life, and that assisted suicide shouldn’t be thought to be ‘therapy’.

It says that there isn’t any safeguard that may stop undue strain being placed on somebody to finish their lives by assisted suicide and warns that not solely terminally sick folks but in addition these with disabilities and older folks “could really feel subtly pressured to finish their lives prematurely as a consequence of attitudinal obstacles in addition to the dearth of acceptable providers and assist”.

“Our guideline is that we affirm the inherent worth of each human life – no matter age; bodily, psychological, or emotional well being; or incapacity,” the submission reads.

“A precept recognised throughout the pandemic when the aged and infirm had been prioritised for vaccination and safety.

“This precept is undermined by laws that allows the terminally sick to finish their lives. Physician assisted suicide and euthanasia should not personal acts.

“They contain an individual bringing concerning the loss of life of one other. The societal implications of such a regulation change have severe implications.”

Mr Veitch went on to warn that in areas the place assisted suicide has already been launched, unique safeguards have later been rebranded ‘obstacles’ and eliminated.

He additionally questioned the suggestion that assisted suicide is a painless and “simple different” to residing with a terminal sickness.

“Evidence means that this isn’t the case with some people experiencing lengthy deaths and awakening from the cocktail of medicine, which locations sufferers, households and their docs in extraordinarily troublesome conditions,” he mentioned.

He said, “Endorsing a medical path to ending an individual’s life undermines elementary ethics; endorses the idea that sure lives are now not price residing; and radically alters the character of the doctor-patient relationship by undermining the Hippocratic Oath to first ‘do no hurt’.”
