Journalists at The Athletic Move to Join New York Times Union

Journalists at The Athletic, a sports activities information web site owned by The New York Times, intend to unionize, they stated on Monday.

A bunch of about 200 editorial staff within the United States have requested The Times to acknowledge them as a part of the Times Guild, which represents almost 1,500 members together with reporters, editors and different editorial staff on the newspaper.

The Times purchased The Athletic in early 2022 for $550 million. In July 2023, the newspaper stated it could disband its sports activities part and depend on protection from The Athletic.

“The work we do is union work, and we imagine we ought to be afforded the identical advantages and protections because the Times Guild members below their present contract,” Katie Strang, a senior investigative author for The Athletic, stated in an announcement.

The Times Guild, which is affiliated with the NewsGuild of New York, represents reporters and a few editors at The New York Times. Tech staff at The Times and staff at Wirecutter, a product advice web site owned by the newspaper, are represented by separate bargaining items.

Leaders of the Times Guild on Monday urged The New York Times to acknowledge that “our colleagues at The Athletic are Times Guild members.”

If The Times doesn’t voluntarily acknowledge the Athletic staff as a part of the union, the NewsGuild of New York stated it could take up the matter with the National Labor Relations Board.

A Times spokesman, Jordan Cohen, stated in an e-mail that the corporate was reviewing the request from The Athletic’s newsroom.
