“It is now time to take the subsequent step for our nation,” Greenland’s Prime Minister Múte Egede mentioned.
“Like different nations on the planet, we should work to take away the obstacles to cooperation — which we are able to describe because the shackles of the colonial period — and transfer on,” he added.
Egede, who has led Greenland since 2021 and hails from the pro-independence Community of the People (IA) party, mentioned Denmark’s relations with Greenland had not created “full equality,” and that the island deserves to symbolize itself on the world stage.
“Our cooperation with different nations, and our commerce relations, can’t proceed to happen solely by way of Denmark,” he mentioned.
Under a 2009 settlement with Denmark, Greenland can declare independence solely after a profitable referendum — which Egede appeared to trace at holding in tandem with the island’s upcoming parliamentary election in April.
“Work has already begun on creating the framework for Greenland as an impartial state,” he mentioned. “It is important to take main steps … The upcoming new election interval should, along with the residents, create these new steps.”
