Elon Musk making an attempt to affect upcoming German election, Berlin says

The warning comes a day after the Tesla CEO doubled down on his help for the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in an opinion piece within the German newspaper Welt am Sonntag.

He argued that the AfD was the “final spark of hope” for the nation. While the conservative Christian Democratic Union is main the polls with 30 p.c, the far-right AfD is in second place with 19 p.c, in keeping with POLITICO’s Poll of Polls.

Musk’s feedback induced main political backlash.

“Elon Musk is trying nothing lower than Vladimir Putin,” Lars Klingbeil, the chief of the ruling Social Democrats, mentioned to German writer Funke Mediengruppe. Both Putin and Musk need to see anti-democratic forces succeed within the elections, inflicting Germany to be “plunged into chaos,” he added.

The tech titan’s purpose is to extend his wealth, one other Social Democrat politician, Saskia Esken, mentioned Monday. “He needs to turn out to be even richer. And all the pieces he does, he does with exactly this purpose in thoughts.”

Friedrich Merz, the lead candidate for the conservative Christian Democrats, criticized Musk’s feedback as “intrusive and presumptuous.”
